2015 / 2016 Mushy Gushy Reflection & Announcement

2015 was my first full year as a wedding planner and floral designer. It was the year of friends, friendors, finding art, and most importantly, caring. I’m more than a little excited about what’s in store for this company in 2016 and want to start a new practice of putting my plans out there in writing. That way maybe I’ll be held to the standard of some kind of internet accountability God and will be driven to make it all happen.

One thing I didn’t expect to happen in 2015 was to make so many new friends. I had many phone calls and coffee meetings with both clients and vendors that ran long, and not because we were talking shop. The fact that the kindest, funniest, most interesting people found their way into my life through this business is like when you open a box of cereal and realize there’s a toy in it, when it’s 2015 and they stopped putting toys in cereal boxes. I didn’t know it was going to turn out like that but I’m glad it did. I sincerely hope the trend of meeting the most genuine and lovely people continues into 2016 and much longer.

Friends made the year enjoyable and so did finding my footing as an artist. I thought my chance to be an artist was lost when I changed my major from fashion design to paralegal studies in 2008. I finally got my art back this year. You know that feeling when you’re in your tiny apartment kitchen stabbing the hell out of rose stems to get the thorns off, listening to the Backstreet Boys greatest hits and you’re thinking, “this is so fun”? Or when you’re running up on a deadline for a wedding inspiration photoshoot and decide at the last minute to make a dreamcatcher out of flowers and it actually works and looks cool and hippyish just like you wanted? I had an epiphany during those and other moments this year: flowers and styling are my art. My only question for next year is whether I can expand on that creativity and get out of my comfort zone even more.

While getting out of my comfort zone creatively, this year confirmed that the wedding industry is where I belong. There is no greater sense of accomplishment, for me, than when one of my clients expresses gratitude for the hard work we put into making their wedding day as perfect as possible. The sense of accomplishment isn’t about the details being perfect (sometimes they aren’t, no matter how hard we try). It’s about caring. It’s about a couple caring enough about each other to declare it in front of a bunch of people. It’s about caring for your guests and putting thought and effort into making your wedding a memorable experience for them. And it’s about caring for my clients, who trust me to care just as much as they do.

Most of all, 2015 was about learning what Amanda Joy Events is all about. Amanda Joy Events is about art and friendship and caring. I definitely didn’t have it all figured out when I started this business but with this year came a sense of lucidity. I have a clear picture of my mission going forward and have been working on a logo and website design that will hopefully convey what I see for the future of this business: a wedding planning and floral design company that delights in the delicate care of our clients.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day, month, week, and happy new year.

Look for the logo and website reveal on Wednesday, January 13th, 2016!
